Biophysical Profile

Baby had his first BPP (biophysical profile) and AFI (amniotic fluid index) tests, and will continue these on a weekly basis. During the BPP, the ultrasound technician watched for eight tasks to be completed, including breathing for thirty seconds, body movements, and demonstrations of muscle tone such as flexion of the arms and legs. Baby completed all 8 tasks in 8 minutes! During the AFI, the technician measured the 'pockets' of amniotic fluid around baby. Heart rate was in the 140s and everything was normal. We got done so quickly that we had some time to try for pictures. I got a photo of his foot and his nose and mouth, but we couldn't quite get him to move enough for a profile picture. Afterward, I had two more appointments in OB/GYN, including another non-stress test. Baby was very cooperative and the test was 'reactive' (indicating that blood flow and oxygen to the fetus is adequate) before I even had the movement buzzer in my hand! I was able to meet with the nurse practitioner right away and we finished up an hour early. Good job, baby!
